A spotlight on three of our Black-owned members

The media is traditionally a very white industry that hugely under-represents Black-owned businesses and is going to have to change a lot in order to support and showcase those businesses in the way they deserve. And we want to actively help push that change.

Here we put the spotlight on the three amazing businesses that joined us as part of our Giving Back scheme in July.

KAMSO KIDS

When buying clothing for her son Asher, founder Seyi Sokoya noticed that little mirrored their African heritage.

She wanted Asher and other children worldwide to be able to wear clothing that easily integrates into their wardrobe yet is inspired by African culture and ethically made by African people.

This sparked the idea of setting up her ethical kidswear brand Kamso Kids.

Sourced and produced in Africa and ethically crafted by their Nigerian artisans, each piece is made using fabrics emulating Africa's earthy tones, vibrant prints and soft textures

Created for children aged 6 months to 6 years, the collection includes rompers, shorts and skirts.

SELFMADE CANDLE

When working as a global events manager, travelling the world, Ricki Lawal would always carry her candle with her. This enabled her to bring some of the comforts of home with her while being on-the-go.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Ricki wanted to continue looking after herself and continue practising self-care.

Without the possibility of going out to physical stores to buy some of her favourite artisan candles, she decided to make them herself. And this is how the journey of her eco-conscious, vegan-friendly wellness brand Selfmade Candle begun.

BETTERSHARED

@bettershared

Frustrated by the fact that African and Caribbean artists were largely underrepresented in the art world, Swakara Atwell-Bennett launched BetterShared in 2016 - a space dedicated to showcasing emerging artists of the African diaspora.

Their network has over 200 artists crossing the continent of Africa and the diaspora across the Caribbean, Northern and Southern America and Europe.

Working directly with each artist and hand-selecting each piece, BetterSelect is the go-to for discovering original art and limited edition prints online. And every piece you purchase supports the artist’s practice.

The curated collection includes paintings, drawings and prints.
