5 tips on improving your wellbeing during lockdown as a small business owner

Running a small business is no easy feat and especially not in a pandemic. As we’re entering another lockdown, managing your wellbeing as a small business owner is more important than ever.

‘Self-care’ is easy to push to the bottom of the list, however, being proactive in looking after yourself will not only benefit you but it’ll also benefit your business.

Here we share 5 things to be mindful of during this time.

Switch Off

For product-based business owners, the pressure to be present on social media is huge. While it’s a beneficial and key platform it’s still very easy to get caught up in mindless scrolling. And there's no denying the impact it has on mental health, especially self-comparison.

During a time when there’s a constant explosion of news, taking a break from the noise, social media included, is so important.

Set aside specific times throughout the day where you reply to messages on social media or do some interaction and put your phone away in the evening (if you’re able to).

BE MINDFUL OF YOUR TIME

The line between workplace and home has become more blurred than ever and carving out a healthy work-life balance is key.

If you focus too much on work and neglect other areas of your life then eventually your work will suffer as a result. That’s why it’s important to make a conscious effort to keep your work hours in check.

Running a small business can be all-consuming so if you’re able to keep your mind focused on something non-work related during your downtime, that can help clear your head and increase your happiness levels.

A SCHEDULE THAT WORKS FOR YOU

We all have different peak productivity times and finding out yours will enable you to create habits that serve your business goals.

If you’re especially productive in the morning you’re absolutely fine to let your team know that you’ll be less available during these times. Ditch a rigid schedule and find one that works for you and your business and encourage your team to do the same.

We know working from home surrounded by your family can often be tricky, however, by taking advantage of your most productive hours, you’ll get a lot more done in less time.

LEAN ON YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM

Don’t be afraid or feel embarrassed to turn to your support system and voice any worries that you might have - whether that’s a small business community, a friend or a mentor.

Seek advice from fellow business owners or discuss any issues with your employees and get them involved.

FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL

COVID-19 has presented unique challenges to small businesses and these days there are a lot that we simply cannot control. Speculating over matters out of your hands will only add more stress and worry so remember to only focus on what you can actually control.

Look at what areas of your business might need fine-tuning right now and dedicate your energy to strengthen your strategy to help ride out the storm.
