Proof that you don't need a PR agency to get results

In 2022, a PR agency told Aimee Smale that her brand, OddMuse, wasn’t interesting enough, which led her to make the decision to take PR in-house. It would turn out to be one of the most pivotal decisions for the business.

OddMuse is a slow fashion brand specialising in luxury looks, and for the last few years, has seen incredible growth. In her post, shown below, Aimee shares some of the milestone moments since taking their PR in-house.

Proof that you don’t need a PR agency, and that there is so much power in taking PR into your own hands. We know that the people who are going to tell your story best are the ones closest to the product, but here’s another major reason that we encourage brands to take the reins on their PR.

You create your own relationships

PR is built on relationships, conversations with journalists and editors, and getting to know people and the stories they cover. If you work with an agency, they own those relationships, and you pay a hefty price for the privilege of being put in front of them. Build your own relationships and take control of your own success, without having to pay thousands for coverage.

Become the go-to

Owning these relationships in house means you get to have conversations about the brand you work with, and your brand can become known as the go-to in the industry or sector. By nurturing these relationships in house, your brand becomes known and valued, and instead of being in a pool with other brands that an agency may represent, the journalist or editor can come straight to source, and to your brand.

Make it personal

Editors are humans, so you can build personal (and sometimes even friendly!) relationships with journalists and editors that will stand you in good stead for future features. It’s nice to be nice but it pays off too, so a birthday wish or a compliment on their latest piece goes a long way.

Go as far as you want to go

You get out what you put in, but with the right tools and support you can take PR as far as you want to go, and the proof is in the pudding for OddMuse, who have secured incredible features and seen their business soar, which started by taking PR in house. You own the results and you own the output, and there is no other feeling quite like it.
